Are you a Nurse for the profession, the money or another reason?

#1

We’ve been hearing about nurses that say they’re only in the profession for the high pay that comes with it. We know that is probably true of just about any job that comes with high pay scales.

What we’d like to know is why you’re a nurse?

Is it for the love of the profession?
Is it for the money?
Is it another reason?

I have been an RN for 43 years. I can’t think of any other profession where I’d be happy or fulfilled. There have been some instances where I’ve looked at other women doing their work and thought that it might be OK to do that. There was once a woman holding a fire hose and spraying down the shovels on earth-moving equipment. Seemed like it would be fun for a few days! But, not permanently… Taking care of people during their crises and seeing them go on with their lives has been so rewarding.

Since I was a little girl of 5 I wanted to be a nurse. I was blessed by Jesus in Church, one day he came down from the cross at the alter. I knew that was what he wanted me to do. I stayed with that belief until I qualified in 1982. I am 55 now and can’t imagine doing anything else. I am so privileged.

I’m very proud to be a nurse. During my first few years of nursing - especially year #2, when I got into hospital work - it was a huge part of my identity. But it wasn’t solely because of the career path. I came from a difficult situation, and spent much of my 20s floundering. I knew I wanted to be something, but I didn’t know what. I’d had an intense fear of making the wrong choice instilled in me, but no help making the right one. I knew I wanted job security, decent pay, and I wanted a job that helped people. I stumbled into nursing without really knowing what it was.

I guess that is my vocation. I feel happy when I can help people in some way.

I AM IN THIS PROFESSION FOR LOVE OF IT. I LOVE WHAT I DO AND ENJOY PEOPLE. I CAN’T GET OVER ALL THE CHANGES IN THE PROFESSION OVER THE YEARS BUT IT IS GROWING AND KEEPING UP TO THE TIMES. THE MONEY AND BENEFITS ARE GREAT BUT WITH THAT IF YOU DON’T LOVE YOUR JOB WHY BOTHER?? THIS IS A DREAM JOB FOR ME EVER SINCE I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL. I THOUGHT I WANTED TO BECOME A NUN BUT MY MOM SAID NO/DAD SAID YES. BUT, I TALKED WITH A FRIEND OF MY LATE SISTER’S AND SHE WENT WHERE I WENT AND SHE TOLD ME ALL ABOUT HOW WONDERFUL IT WAS TO GET SUCH A GREAT EDUCATION AND I WAS SO EXCITED AT THIS THAT I CHANGED MY MIND AND WENT TO THE SAME SCHOOL AND IT WAS EVERYTHING SHE SAID IT WOULD BE!!!
